Mud Bath

A while ago Kacie brought Christian outside while she was weeding our weed filled gutter. It had just rained so the weeds could easily be pulled out. Christian was busy entertaining himself. Kacie looked over to see Christian rubbing mud in his hair like it was shampoo. We were out there for two hours and Christian loved every minute of it. These are some photos taken after the mud bath.

Christian thinks Eric is really great. Christian has been trying to do all the things that Eric does. Just the other day Eric spit out the window of the shed as he was holding Christian the other day. He reached for the window as Eric was walking away. Eric went back to the window and Christian did the same. Here are some photos of them hanging out together.

Memorial Day

Christian and I went to the park in Moroni with Karleigh, Jadon, and Ethan. We layed out a blanket for our picnic. While we were eating Karleigh noticed that Ethan was not around. She looked at the playground and saw Ethan with a mischievous grin as if to say, "Look what I'm going to do..." ready to come down the slide. She got there just in time to catch him at the bottom. It must have been a good time because Christian zonked out in the wagon on the way home.

Later in the day Eric, Christian, and I had a campfire in Ephraim Canyon with our neighbors. We roasted hot dogs and visited. Christian loved playing in the dirt as usual.

Birthday Celebration

Christian was sick for his birthday and missed out on a birthday cake. Karleigh said we could share Ethan's. Christian ate the berries on top, then proceeded to smear whipped topping and cake all over the table and on himself. You can see videos of Christian and Ethan on Jim's facebook.

Christian is now 1 year old! He likes to eat sticks, go for walks outside, as well as playing in the dirt. He can say a few words like ball, banana, peaches, mom, and dad. He gives hugs, waves goodbye and blows kisses. Here are a few pictures of his adventures!

It won't be long until these two start being mischievous together.Christian thinks Jadon is very cool. He tries to be just like him.

Our Trip to Moab

At the beginning of March Eric, Christian and I took a trip down to Moab to visit Joe and Brandi. Eric and Joe went on multiple hikes while we were there to take reference photos for Eric's artwork. We also ate delicious food, visited, and watched The Big Country with Gregory Peck and Charlton Heston. Good times!
The picture of us was taken in front of Turret Arch in Arches National Park. The photo of Matthew modeling was taken on the way to Corona Arch. Joe said to Matthew, "Look at the camera," and that's the pose he got.

Another Update After Another Blogging Dry Spell

At this moment Eric is in a figure drawing class at Snow College. He knows the teacher of that class pretty well and asked if he could come join in on his days off from work. He looks forward to it every week. He is also planning to enter a few pieces into an art show at the CUAC (an art building on Ephraim's main street).
I still stay with Christian at home. My day mostly consists of keeping the house together, occasionally working on a quilt, and playing with Christian. I am looking forward to warm spring days, so I can play with him outside again.
On Eric's days off we usually play a game, go on a walk, or something fun together. We also spend quite a bit of time with our fabulous neighbors, Zane and Krista. We play games, talk, and watch movies together. Eric and Zane, both being artists like to talk about art together.
Christian is now nine months old. He has four teeth, two on the bottom front and the two next to the two front on the top. His nickname at present is 'The Vampire Baby'. He can stand for a short time on his own, and I'm sure steps will quickly come. He is also becoming an avid dancer. Enjoy the pictures of the crazy guy below.

Been a while since I posted anything, so here goes!

Kacie, Christian and I are still living in Ephraim, which we really enjoy. Kacie is being a stay at home mother, which pretty much wipes her out. She cleans, she sews, she cooks, she goes to the library, and during and inbetween all this she tends to the little guy. She's amazuzing. Christian I rename Mr. Particular. Everything is on his timetable. When he's hungry, he wants it now. When he wants a poop scoop, he wants it now. When he wants to be picked up, which is always, he wants it now. When he wants to sleep, to wake up, to be played with, to be consoled, to have attention, he wants it now. And apparently he's decided he wants to crawl so now he crawls anywhere and everywhere.
As for myself, I am still working at the prison and enjoying it. I recently re-qualified on the firearms, which was fun. Nothing like getting paid to shoot! On my days off I draw and paint. I'm currently working on a self-portrait, a portrait of my Kacie, and a couple of landscapes. I recently finished a painting of Gethsemane, which I entered into the Springville Religious Art Show. Hopefully it is accepted. I've been studying and delving into different recipes of mediums for oils, and working with adding and blending paint into the mediums on the canvass as they dry. I'm pleasd with the results. Also on my days off I build wood furniture. I recently finished an oak cabinet for my art supplies, (many of which are toxic/fatal, hence the locking cabinet), and I'm currently working on an oak bench/chest which is turning out nicely. In my spare time, and often when I'm supposed to be doing something else, I read. I'm now reading Jesus the Christ, an excellent book. Also, The Story of Art, which is very well done and I recommend if you go for art history. I often read Drawing from Life as well, one of the best books I've read about figure drawing. And last but not least, I'm slowly reading/abridging A Christmas Carol, which Kacie and I read together for christmas. If you haven't read it, I do so recommend it.

Well, that's about it for us. We're a happy little family and Christian's cute to boot! We enjoy the sanpete valley, especially now as the mountains turn deep brown, the leaves turn orange, red and purple, and the sky is gray and white. And best of all, we're close to family. We often go to Moroni and visit, and mooch dinner, and talk art with Daniel and Karleigh and Pa. From visiting, I've learned a lot about Dad in the last year or so, and how much alike we are. He's a simple man, really. He loves nature, he loves his family, he has a simple but unshakeable testimony, and he's the hardest worker I think I'll ever meet. He silently produces astounding photographs, with no worldly recognition or praise, or any desire for such. This last thing has taught me much about him and the way he lives his life. I'm grateful for our parents. We are blessed to have the parents we have.

Here are just a few things that have been happening since we last posted.

Christian's feet are now big enough to wear these cute shoes.

After finding his feet (as you see two pictures below) he now likes to chew on his toes. Last night he ate his toes along with rice cereal... very messy!

He can now roll back to tummy and tummy to back.
And here he found his feet about a month ago.

Eric has been working on art pieces, working with wood, and working at work. He just finished making a cabinet for his art supplies, is working on an atonement and a Santa Clause piece, and in the mean time plays with Christian. Kacie gets to stay home with Christian, which she loves. As Kacie told Jim, they get up, eat, play, and sleep, eat play, and sleep all day (while mom tries to get her chores done). Jim's reply to this was, "I hope that is what retirement is like." Kacie also just finished painting Christian's crib.

This may not be the most exciting post, but hey, at least we blogged!

I am grateful for the mountains...

I am grateful to live in a valley in the mountains. Yesterday I got up early, packed a backpack and headed for the hills. I drove out on a dirt road, parked, then wandered through the sagebrush and cedars. I eventually came across a 20 ft deep cutting with a river bed at the bottom. I found a spot to scramble down, then hiked up the riverbed, deeper into the hills. Soon, cedar covered mountains grew up on either side of me, and the sides of the riverbed grew taller and taller. I soon had to climb over large stone steps with small waterfalls running over them. The steps continued to come, bigger and bigger, but I had climbing rope with me in case I needed it. Eventually I came to a corner in the mountain, where the stream I was following came dropping over a waterfall and rock walls loomed up on all sides of me, except for the cutting I had just hiked up. To the right of the waterfall there was a small clearing, surrounded by a few Scrub oak and Cedar trees. It's almost spring so there was some short green grass in the clearing. Beautiful. With some stones I made a small fire pit, lit a small fire with dead limbs off of the Cedar trees, built a small stove over the fire out of shards of rock, and made some Apple cider. I sat there, with my back to the flat rock wall, eating some lunch and sipping on smoky cider. I read some, slept a little, sat quietly and listened to the birds and water falling. A few hours later I buried my fire, packed up, cleaned my cup in the icy cold waterfall, then hiked out. On the way back I took a different route. I cut to the right of the riverbed, up a steep side of the mountain, eventually coming out on top of the peak above my car where I could look out on the valley below. Beautiful. I hiked down to my car, and drove 15 mins to my house.
Again, I am grateful to live in a valley in the mountains.

Kacie is still with child and growing fast. She is working for Ephraim city and knows personally the county judge, chief of police, and mayor of Ephraim. Her hobbies include sewing and looking good, both of which she excells at. Kacie is currently working to finish a baby blanket and baby to match it.
Eric is working at Gunnison Correctional Facility and hopes to continue to do so through these here hard times. His days off are filled with reading and painting and using his new tools to build simple shelves and cabinets. Eric currently is working on multiple paintings, one of the vision in the Sacred Grove, and a few landscapes in the 'oil/acrylic wash' technique seen on papa's blog. Also, more recently, Eric travelled with brother Daniel to Las Vegas, NV to compete in an Ultimate (frisbee) tournament where he experienced nervousness, awe, embarassment, wind, comradery, determination, rain, good times, mud, and aching body,(in that order). The team played well, dominating the field. Recognize.

Training Academy Graduation

Graduation is at Central Utah Correctional Facility(Gunnison Prison), 225 East 300 North in Gunnison, Utah. It will be held inside the prison, so if you're planning on coming call me first so I can run you through what you can and can't bring in. There are all kinds of things you can't have in your cars, even in the parking lot.

Jim informed us on Sunday that it was time for us to put a new post on the blog, so here is an update on our lives.
Eric is attending the police academy in Gunnison to become a Corrections Officer. When he comes home he is tired from working out and listening to lectures, but likes it much better than Terrel's. It seems to me that he likes it more and more each day. He says he is impressed with his lieutenants and other higher ranked officers so far. His boots also shine so he can see himself in them because he has polished them so much for his inspections. I guess Grandpa Ashmore taught him how to shine shoes. Just the other day at inspection Eric said his officer had stopped in front of him after looking him over, Eric looked down at a man about my height looking straight in his face. His officer said, "Heywood." Eric said, "Yes Sir?" The officer said, "You're looking pretty good." Eric said, "Thank you sir." (We both thought it was funny, but maybe you'll just have to have Eric play it out for you in person).

I just started working part-time at the Ephraim City Building. I am helping to create a map of the Ephraim Cemetery. I know it sounds odd, but I like it and find it interesting. I occasionally get to handle a big, old, falling apart book of burial records which dates back to the 1800's. Mostly I type names, dates, etc. into a computer program. I will be quitting my job as a C.N.A. at Autumn Park at the end of the month. This means no more graveyards, weekends, smelly briefs (diapers), etc! I guess you could say I'm going from really old people to dead people.

I was driving home from work one day during a massive thunderstorm. Huge, dark clouds had settled in the valley below the level of the mountains, close enough to the ground it seemed like I could reach out and touch them. As I drove along the highway the clouds would drift past me they were so low. As I was under one the wind tore it in half and the sun blazed through. It was truly amazing and I'm SO glad I had a camera with me.

On Saturday I was finishing up the evening at the assisted living center by giving pills to a sweet lady who is 96 years old. There are senior apartments down the street from us, and she was sitting so she could see them from the window. She said to me smiling, "Do you see those apartments over there? I'm going to live over there when I get old!"
I couldn't help but think of the story related to me of Grandpa Heywood saying about the man in the Dr.'s office walking slowly with his walker, "Someday I'll be that old."
I am so impressed with and admire my elders. I have learned a great deal from them. They age with wisdom and courage. I truly have become a better person because of each of their examples.

So the other day it was 83 degrees outside, with a warm, gentle breeze. I ditched class and we were off to the park for some kite flying! Well, I decided I didn't want to wait so I let the kite up into the air as we were walking. Next thing I know it's wrapped around the highest part of a lightpole and the string breaks off. Well I recently applied to the Department of Corrections at Gunnison Prison. I took the physical test which was easy, and the written test, which I did very well on. I have only to take a psychological test, then I'm off to the academy.

Unless of course I get the Trooper position I applied for, then forget the silly prison.

Could use your prayers to get the Trooper position! With all your prayers and the extensive information David has given, and my high test scores, I think I can make it!

I'm just going to ramble on a bit about what's going on in our lives.

I just got out of class, when Kacie gets home we're off to the temple, then to ma and pa's to intrude on their date night to do some laundry. I should be doing homework right now since my big paintings are due in less than a month. I still work at Terrel's, whilst Kacie works with the old peoples. We're leaving Snow after this semester. We're not sure where we're going to go to college. We may go to alaska for the summer. We'll most likely go there to visit Kacie's famske, and maybe stay on for a month or two.(I'll find a job somewheres). I just ate some rib-meat that I bought at the store and it was delicious. We don't see Brett and Sherrie much, even though they live within walking distance. We started borrowing movies from them as a means to visit for a few minutes, but we're running out of movies to borrow! Soon we'll be borrowing cups of sugar, socks, and who knows what else.

I called Bryan the other day and chatted(tear). I miss my brother: good ol' days of fishing and hiking and bowling at midnight while we check out the ladies(not anymore of course) and laying pavers and all that good stuff. I have some good memories with all of my bros, and its awesome to be able to say that every one of them(as far as I know) has some good memories that have me in them. Hiking, fishing, hunting, landscaping, yardwork, the beach, the Canyon, sledding, sports, the temple, different weddings, and so on. Not everyone in this world can say that they are on good terms and can joke with all their siblings. I could call anyone of you and get a laugh and just talk. It really is wonderful. And its all due to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which is due to faithful parents. Our talents, morals, goals, standards, work ethic, and aspirations that give us the success we have is all rooted in our parents and what they did for us. Thanks Mom and Dad, for our success and the relationship we have in our family.

Here is some 'keeping in touch' sort of news!

Eric called one of his professors today and got permission to finish painting his life size painting of Mary (the one that hung in Jim and Terri's house last year, and it looked like me) in an art studio at Snow with oil paints instead of acrylics.
He was excited because he has been unable to use oils for quite sometime because we lack a properly ventilated area. He has said a number of times that he would like to find his style with oil paints, so he is very excited to practice with them again. He is going to finish the painting this semester for a final in his figure drawing class. I think it will be AMAZING!

I've just come from Brett and Sherrie's blog and noticed a post with MY chalk drawing on it. Now, its being a chalk drawing is not what offends me, nor being displayed on another's blog, but it is the lower right-hand corner which reads 'sherrie' that tickles my attack nerve. A name other than mine placed on a piece of MY artwork is found in only two circumstances. First, those pieces I do for, and address to, my sweetheart, Kacie Boo, have a name other than mine on it, but that right is reserved for my love. Second, those STOLEN by others!! I believe this instance is the latter!! You don't want any trouble you say? Well you best keep your receipt, cuz you just BOUGHT some!

Jesus Christ, the Great Son of God

The Atonement of Jesus Christ consists of two parts; two purposes for what Christ did.
First, to be 'at-one' with God geographically; that is, to one day live with Him again. Because of what Christ did we can be in the presence of God one day, 'at-one' with Him.
Second, to be 'at-one' with God as a matter of identity; that is, to be as God is. This second purpose for the Atonement is to overcome our fallen, distanced, worldly and mortal state and become as Father is. Near the end of His life Christ even prayed to God, asking that we all be in one with Christ and the Father, as they are one with another.
Those are the redeeming purposes for the Atonement, but what is the Atonement? The Atonement is as described by Tad R. Callister, "that suffering endured, that power displayed, and that love manifested by the Savior in three principal locations, namely, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Cross of Calvary, and the Tomb of Arimathea." In short, that is what the Atonement is. The planning, executing, and restoration brought to pass by those moments.
However, the Atonement did not only take place in these three places, but was begun before Adam and the Fall of man, before Christ's earthly ministry in the premortal council when he stood forth, saying, " here am I, send me," (Abraham 3:27), and His Atonement continues today, even as a glorified resurrected being.
The Atonement is Christ's mission: his mission "to bring to pass the immortality and Eternal Life of man."(Moses 1:39). Only a being who has experienced all can have the capacity to love as fully as Jesus Christ, and it is that love that brings His eternal Labor.

Small Wonders

I attended a presentation yesterday which emphasized the importance of taking time to develop a wonder for the mysteries of life, the small wonders in particular.
One of the examples was spider webs, made of silk, which are made up of proteins, don't decay, but if a piece of meat was left out, it would decay quickly. My professor then asked, "Why is it that spider webs don't decay?" His answer was, "We don't know."
He ended his presentation with this quotation by Albert Einstein, "The fairest thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and science. He who knows it not can no longer wonder, no longer feel amazement, is as good as dead, a snuffed out candle."
I've been thinking about this subject ever since. It's true, our Father in heaven created all things in the earth "for the benefit and use of man, both to please the eye and to gladden the heart." (D&C 59:18). Heavenly Father wouldn't have created these small wonders and mysteries in our lives if they were unimportant in His eyes. I think that by taking the time to appreciate these small wonders, we can show our gratitude for the things which our Father has placed so lovingly in our lives. ~Kacie~

Brett and Sherrie in the lead

So I've realized that Brett and Sherrie's blog is THE place to post. Perhaps it's from their long absence, I don't know, but the fact remains that we are all losing in the number of comments to our posts. I've decided a post is judged by the number of comments made to it, and Brett and Sherrie are sitting pretty at 15 for their latest. Myself and a few others are coming in second with 12, followed closely by a few others with 11 and 9 comments. Even Dave and Erin's 'superposts' as I like to call them, (5+ pictures on every post), have not come close. Now there is the fact that some comments have absolutely nothing to do with the initial post, but it was in fact the post that first brought about the random comment-conversations, regardless of their relevance.
Each blog has it's strategies: the above-mentioned 'superposts' by Dave, the lengthy-text posts by Dad, the use of video by John, the humorous posts by Bryan, the wondrous photographs by Daniel, and the well written and witty posts of Joe. But none of our styles has placed us above Brett and Sherrie in the comment standings.
I congratulate you, but warn you. Evan has been absent for longer than you.

On our trip to California Kacie and I drove down to the San Diego Temple for a session. The grounds were beautiful, but the inside was amazingly beautiful! It was a wonderfully spiritual experience being inside the House of the Lord. All the many windows make it very bright and colorful.
p.s. These pictures were taken with a cell phone camera, which is like the 'wooden-club' of photography, so don't mock.

Bryan and I fished the Snake River in wyoming at around midnight. We bought some pepsi, some yoohoos, and some hot chocolate and fished through the night! This is our catch: the longest one is about 18-20 inches. Fishing with brudders...*tear*...I love it.
